Victoria Hernandez-Velazquez was born in Michoacan, Mexico and raised in Emporia, Kansas. Her work explores identity, self-evaluation, and heritage as a first-generation Mexican-American. Hernandez holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Art with concentrations in Photography and Graphic Design from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.
Her distinctive personal style radiates self-awareness as a Hispanic female in the United States. Creating has become a method of self-discovery, learning, and healing. In their recent works, she explores the process with different alternative processes using fabrics, DASS Transfers, hand embroidery, and book making. By using these processes, tough internal feelings are expressed to others.
Hernandez has been awarded Jurors Choice in the Emporia State University Student Show for her wall piece Piecing it Together. Also, she received Honorable Mention in the Salina Art Center’s Sunflower Biennial for her triptych from her series Children of Immigrants.
